Martin Luther King Jr. is known as one of the greatest civil rights activist in American history which his actions and campaigns led to the equal and fair treatment of all African-Americans.
In the eleven-year period between 1957 and 1968, King traveled over 6 million miles and has spoken more than 2500 speeches on many stages, wherever there was injustice, protest, and action; and towards equality and justice of African- Americans in the United States which proved very effective and ensured the future of Equal treatment towards African- Americans regardless of their skin colour, race or religion.
Martin Luther King's insistence method of using a non-violent approach regardless of the brutality from the oppressor was a major factor in the respect and acknowledgment given to the civil rights movement in America during a time of unrest and unease in the country proving non-violent and peaceful demonstrations are more effective .
Martin Luther King's forming of organizations such as the SCLC in 1957 and his major civil rights activities and efforts to end the segregation in America has contributed greatly to African- American communities such as the boycotts, sit-ins and marches in Birmingham Campaign, March on Washington DC which has abolished racial discrimination laws in many areas including public transportation, employment, voting rights and education in the United States America all contributing to the end of segregation in America based on race and skin colour.
King’s protests on behalf of civil rights were able to make genuine progress in American society and his emphatic desire for the country to come together regardless of their skin color was ultimately recognized as a major contribution to America uniting as one nation, due to is commitment to peace, non-violence and equality for everyone.

- The Second Annual Achievement Award - The Guardian Association of the Police Department of New York, 1958.
- Magazine of New Dehli recognized Dr. King as one of the sixteen world leaders who had contributed most to the advancement of freedom during 1959.
- Named American of the Decade by Laundry, Dry Cleaning, and Die Workers International Union, 1963.
- The John Dewey Award, from the United Federation of Teachers, 1964.

- The Nobel Peace Prize, 1964
